Finger and Hand Tattoos: Love Ideas and Honest Advice
Finger and hand tattoos are some of the most popular love tattoos: ring tattoos, tiny hearts, initials, and couple designs that meet when you hold hands. They're also the tattoos that fade fastest. Here are the best ideas, and what to know before you book.
Finger tattoo ideas
1. Tattoo wedding ring
A simple band, a band with a tiny heart, or your wedding date in Roman numerals. It can't be lost, but expect it to need a touch-up.
2. Tiny heart on the ring finger
On the side of the finger it's subtle. On top, it's on show.
3. Initials
One letter on each of you, on the same finger.
4. Matching couple finger tattoos
Half a heart each on the sides of your fingers, so it completes when you hold hands. See more on our couple tattoos page.
5. Moon and star
One each for a couple or for best friends.
6. A tiny symbol on each finger
A short word, dots or simple symbols across the knuckles.

8. A rose
A classic traditional hand tattoo, bold and readable.
9. A swallow between thumb and finger
An old sailor classic.
10. An animal head
Tigers, lions and wolves suit the back of the hand.
11. A small heart on the side of the hand
Shows when you hold hands with someone. That's the point.

The honest bit: finger and hand tattoos fade
- The skin renews fast. Hands are washed, rubbed and used all day, so ink fades and blurs quicker than anywhere else.
- The palm side and between fingers fade worst. Many artists won't tattoo palms or the inner sides of fingers at all.
- Fine line work won't stay crisp. Bolder lines and simple shapes last much better.
- Touch-ups are normal. Plan for one after healing, and maybe more over the years. Ask the studio about their touch-up policy.
- It hurts more than the arm. Around 6 to 7 out of 10 on our pain chart, but finger tattoos are usually quick.
Thinking about work and visibility
Hand and finger tattoos are always on show. Many studios won't do a hand tattoo as someone's first tattoo, and some ask about your job first. That isn't judgement. They've seen people regret it. Hand tattoos are far more accepted than they were, but it's worth thinking about your work and your future plans before you book.
Aftercare for hand and finger tattoos
- Wash gently, pat dry, and apply a very thin layer of balm. See our aftercare cream guide.
- Avoid washing-up gloves rubbing on it, gardening, and harsh cleaning products while it heals.
- Expect it to look patchy while it peels. Hands often heal unevenly before they settle.
