Tattoos for Mum: Ideas to Honour Her
The traditional "Mum" heart has been a tattoo studio staple for over a hundred years, and it's still one of the most requested designs. These ideas run from that classic to quieter modern options, for mums who are still here and for mums you're remembering.
Classic Mum tattoos
1. The traditional Mum heart
A bold red heart with a banner reading "Mum". It looks just as good on a 20-year-old as on a 70-year-old, and old-school lines keep it readable for decades. ForearmUpper arm
2. Mum and Dad swallows
Two swallows with a banner for each parent. Swallows mean coming home, which makes them perfect for parents.

3. Rose with Mum banner
Swap the heart for a rose, or add one rose for each of her children.

4. "Mum" in her own handwriting
Use the signature from a birthday card. Most people end up crying in the studio over this one, in a good way.

5. Her birth flower
January carnation, February violet, March daffodil, April daisy, May lily of the valley, June rose, July larkspur, August gladiolus, September aster, October marigold, November chrysanthemum, December holly. Meanings are in our birth flower tattoo guide.
6. Her favourite flower
Sometimes better than a birth flower, because you'll remember her picking them.

7. Her initials or birth year
Small and simple, on the wrist or behind the ear.
8. A phrase she always said
"Love you to the moon and back", "Be kind", or even "Have you eaten?". The everyday ones mean the most.
9. Her fingerprint as a heart
A thumbprint traced into a heart shape. The studio can work from an ink print on paper.
10. Her hometown or country
An outline, a flag colour, or a flower native to where she grew up.

11. Big heart, little heart
Mum gets the big heart and you get the little one, or you both get both.
12. Each other's birth flower
You wear hers and she wears yours.
13. A swap of words
She has "my girl" or "my boy" and you have "my mum", in each other's handwriting.
14. Matching sun and moon
"You are my sunshine" is a favourite lullaby line for a reason.

Tattoos for a mum who has passed away
If your mum is no longer here, a tattoo can be a way to carry her with you. Many people choose her handwriting, a forget-me-not, her favourite flower with her dates, or a heartbeat line. We cover these gently on our memorial tattoos page, including the common question of tattoo ink with ashes.
Practical tips
- Handwriting needs a good source. A photo of a card is fine, but a scan is better. Bring a few samples so your artist can choose the clearest letters.
- Tell your artist the story. A good artist will add small personal details if they know who the tattoo is for.
- Thinking of a gift? Many studios sell gift vouchers, which are better than booking a surprise tattoo for someone else.
